Hydraulic forging line with 100,000 kN press capacity for the aerospace industry
With the assembly of a hydraulic forging line for the aero-space industry, Schuler has succeeded in gaining access to new market segments. Boasting a capacity of up to 100,000 kN, the press is the largest of eleven lines which Schuler has been commissioned to produce within the last two years. With its broad spectrum of products and services, from 5,000 kN presses to turnkey delivery, Schuler can meet the precise needs of its customers and has thus been able to quickly establish itself in the market for hydraulic forging presses.
In order to meet the special requirements of the aerospace industry, ring blanks are required with diameters of over one meter and made from a wide variety of highly alloyed materials. As they are not allowed to have any welding joints, they must be forged from a single block. Schuler SMG in Waghäusel, Germany, has therefore assembled a hydraulic press with exceptional dimensions. With a diameter of approx. 3,000 mm, the cylinder alone weighs some 200 tons and allows a stroke of 1,800 mm.
In order to carry out the forging process with up to three stages, the press is equipped with a moving bolster. Centering manipulators located at the side are used to grip and lift the forging blank – which can weigh anything up to 6,000 kg – so that the lower die can be shifted with the moving bolster. This ensures that the blank remains in the press center during all forming stages. Swivel manipulators move forging mandrels under the slide, thereby enabling the forging blank to be punched. An ejector cylinder with a force of 5,000 kN is located within the press bed.
The oil hydraulics are positioned at the press head and seven drive systems with 315 kW each ensure a maximum working speed of over 50 mm/s. Even at full press capacity, the machine is still capable of 20 mm/s. These tremendous forces are precisely guided with the aid of a PC control unit .
However impressive these performance figures are, they can still be topped. On request, Schuler also delivers hydraulic forging presses with a press capacity of up to 130,000 kN.
