BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH:
new presses optimize international manufacturing network
Five Schuler Group presses have been installed at facilities of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, the world’s third largest manufacturer of household appliances and market leader in Germany and Europe. At its network of facilities in Traunreut, Bretten, Montanana (Spain) and Cerkezköy (Turkey), BSH produces appliances such as cookers and cooktops.
The BSH manufacturing network is dominated by its stamping plants, which process thousands of tons of steel. Forming presses represent the heart of these plants. The newly acquired so-called “platform presses” are suitable for use at all facilities and flexible enough that dies can be easily exchanged. They also enable common spare part management. After inviting bids from five international press manufacturers, it was decided to award the contract to the Schuler Group.
The platform presses have since been installed at four BSH facilities. Each line consists of an 800-ton transfer press (with eccentric drive), a coil line and a three-axis transfer system.
A key feature of the transfer system is that the gripper rail transfer toolings are connected with fast-action couplings which are automatically disengaged and re-engaged during die change. The state of the clutch is monitored with the aid of sensors. The power and information cables are also coupled automatically, enabling shorter die change times.
In June 2007 the fifth press optimized for the production of cookers and cooktop parts was ordered for the Traunreut facility. The press is due to be handed over in August 2008.
The platform press concept enables BSH to use dies developed and tested at one site also at other facilities. This means that production can be moved flexibly from machine to machine, for example in the case of shifts in capacity or machine downtime.
